Margaret (Kemp) Kratz graduated from the College of St. Catherine in 1982. Margaret transferred to St. Kate's prior to her junior year, and she quickly began making major contributions to the swimming and diving team. During her first season as a Katie she was the conference champion in the 500 Freestyle. She was also a key part of the winning 400 Medley Relay team. Margaret wrapped up the year at the AIAW Nationals by earning three All-American certificates. At nationals, Margaret and her teammates finished seventh in the 800 Freestyle Relay, eleventh in the 400 Freestyle Relay, and tenth in the 400 Medley Relay. These performances helped the swimming and diving team to a 14th place finish overall at the National meet.
During her senior year, Kratz and teammates defended their conference championship in the 400 Medley. They also moved up one spot from the previous year, and finished second in the state. At the national meet, Kratz and teammates combined for two top ten finishes in the Medley and Freestyle relays. She again earned All-American status in these events, and the St. Kate's team moved up another spot overall and finished 13th at the AIAW National meet.
By the time Kratz wrapped up her career for the St. Catherine swimming and diving team she had five All-American honors and two state championships. She swam on four relay teams that finished in the top ten in the nation and she set school records in the 500, 1000, and 1650 Freestyle.
