Kay Lawton coached the College of St. Catherine volleyball team from 1979 until 1998.
During the early 80’s, Lawton’s teams were a perennial powerhouse that dominated the regional and national scene. Coach Lawton led St. Kate’s to nationals four times, twice in the AIAW and two more times to the NCAA Division III tournament. St. Kate’s won their first MIAC conference title in 1983. During these years her teams consistently competed against and beat our Division I and II neighbors.
When Coach Lawton retired from St. Kate’s in 1998, she had a remarkable list of credentials that included her four national tournament appearances, one regional title, two state titles, one conference title and an impressive win total of 335. She also had over 30 student-athletes receive conference honors.
Coach Lawton’s contributions to the sport of volleyball in the Midwest region have been immense. She ran some of the most recognized camps and clinics attracting over 70 athletes each camp. Most recently, her contributions to volleyball were recognized by USA Volleyball as she was awarded the North Country Region Salute at the 2009 Annual Boyce Awards. This award honors individuals for their long-term contribution to the sport of volleyball in the region.
