Wildcats turn in strong performances in dual loss to Saint Benedict

Results

After competing back-to-back against solid Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents, the St. Catherine University swimming and diving team was ready for its first dual meet of the 2014-15 season with the College of Saint Benedict. Despite losing 170-66 to a Blazer squad with greater roster depth, the Wildcats turned in several top swims Friday evening in Collegeville, Minnesota.

"We had some really good swims after a really hard week of practice," said Head Coach Steve Mohs. " I saw some great things with some really tired swimmers. It was really nice to see some tough, hard swims going into (the Thanksgiving holiday) break."

Reigning MIAC Diver-of-the-Year Jenna Nagy (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) had a solid day with a first-place finish on the 3-meter board. Her score of 213.25 beat out Alissa Lager of the Blazers by five points for her best score of the season.

Sophmore Abby Larson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) had two of the top swims Friday night with a second-place time of 2:06.50 in her first appearance in the 200 Freestyle this season, as well as a third place 57.92 time in the 100 Freestyle which was just off her season-best time in the event.

Mary Jane Voss (Mequon, Wis.) continued to show how valuable she is going to be to the Wildcat program early in her rookie year as she collected two second-place times. First, she clocked a 2:21.42 in her first appearance in the 200 IM before collecting a solid time of 1:06.79 in the 100 Backstroke.

In the 500 Freestyle, the Wildcats went 3-4-5 with Bryanna Waage (Valencia, Calif./Hart) taking third with a time of 5:40.07. Haley French Krahn (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) was fourth at 5:42.45, while Ellie Menso (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was fifth with a season best time of 5:48.55 that was over seven seconds faster than a week ago.

The distance group also had a solid day in the 1000 Freestyle with Brooke Soller (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) finishing second in 11:31.09 and Kelsie Olson (La Crosse, Wis./Central) placing third with a season best 11:39.64. Soller was also fifth in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:08.79.

Sydney Wenner (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Preparatory) was just off her season-best time with her second-place clocking of 1:03.55 in the 100 Butterfly. Ashley Gaertner (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) also had a season-best swim in the 100 Butterfly at 1:11.30.

Rosie Hesla (Minneapolis, Minn./South) also had a career-best swim in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:25.88 and a season-best swim in the 100 Freestyle at 1:00.69.

The Wildcats will take a week off of competition for the Thanksgiving holiday before participating in the St. Cloud State University Invite Dec. 5-7 in Rochester, Minnesota.
