NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Catherine University softball team (15-7, 5-1 MIAC) extended their win streak to five with a complete sweep of Carleton College on Saturday. St. Kate's defeated the Knights 9-3 in game one and 7-3 in the second game of the conference doubleheader in Northfield.
Game 1 | St. Catherine 9, Carleton 3
The Wildcats used 15 hits with 36 at bats in the first game for 9 runs. St. Kate's held the Knights off until the bottom of the sixth inning when Carleton hit a homerun for score of 8-3. St. Kate's would go on to score one more run in the game for a final of 9-3.
Sophomore
Mikayla Grant started the scoring streak for St. Kate's in the top of second inning to get the first RBI of the game. Grant was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI in game one. The Wildcats scored two more runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, and three in the sixth.
Sophomore
Alyssa Wicks was 3 for 5 in the first game scoring two runs with two RBI and one stolen base. First-year
Lindsay Burr had a team-leading three runs in the box score for St. Kate's going 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
Sophomore pitcher
Kathryn Proper earned the win playing a near complete game. Proper allowed just two hits facing 24 batters with six strikeouts. Proper was relived by sophomore
Rae Beaner in the bottom 6th allowing the Knights to get the three run homerun. Proper returned to the circle to finish the game and advance her season record to 8-5.
Game 2 | St. Catherine 7, Carleton 3
St. Catherine got things started early in game two taking a 3-0 lead after two full innings. The Knights scored their only runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Rookie shortstop
Alex Ehde was 3 for 4 with a solo RBI and one run. Ehde scored the game winner on a error by the Knights in the top of the fourth inning before St. Kate's brought in one more in the inning to go up 5-3.
First-year
Kaitlyn Backman drove in Burr in the top of the fifth before Ehde hit a double for the RBI that brought Backman for the final score of 7-3.
Proper earned the win from the circle to extend her record to 9-5 allowing two hits, zero runs and striking out four.
Annabelle Schutte was the starting pitcher for St. Kate's pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, six hits and three runs.
St. Catherine returns to St. Kate's Field on Sunday, April 7 for Strike Out Cancer Day in dedication to Kidney Cancer Awareness. The Wildcats will host Bethel University (19-3, 4-2 MIAC) at 1 and 3 p.m.
