Team effort secures senior day sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Four seniors were honored Saturday as the Wildcats faced off against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's. A pregame ceremony honored the historic four years Jenna George, Anna Hinderaker, Trish Sherman, and Megan Miller have had at St. Catherine. Most notably, this group was a key part of the softball team's deep run in the NCAA tournament in 2017. In both games of the doubleheader, Saint Mary's got off to an early two-run lead. And, in both games, the Wildcats' bats erupted, leading to victories of 8-3 and 9-7.

Game 1 | St. Catherine 8, Saint Mary's 3

After a shaky first inning where first-year starter Annabelle Schutte faced seven batters and gave up two runs, the Wildcats scored eight unanswered runs over the next six innings, anchored by a combined six RBIs from first-year shortstop Alex Ehde and senior Jenna George, who hit her program-leading 24th home run. Schutte settled in nicely, allowing only five hits and three runs in seven innings. Besides the first inning, this game was all St. Kate's, who put on a hitting clinic in front of a packed crowd. Hinderaker went 1-2, drawing two walks and scoring twice, adding to her program record of runs scored. First-year Lindsay Burr went 2-3, and Alex Ehde finished 2-4, knocking in Burr for the Wildcats' first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Two batters later, George hit a three-run shot, and although Saint Mary's got one back in the top of the seventh, the Cardinals never threatened the lead.

Game 2 | St. Catherine 9, Saint Mary's 7

Similar to game one, St. Kate's gave up an early lead to the Cardinals. Over 3.1 innings, sophomore pitcher Kathryn Proper surrendered five runs and seven hits, recording three strikeouts and walking five. The Wildcats answered quickly, with junior Amber Montero hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Saint Mary's responded in the second and third inning, taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth. A single by Sherman and RBIs by sophomore Mikayla Grant, Hinderaker, and Ehde gave the Wildcats a 6-5 lead until the sixth inning when the Cardinals tied it up at six apiece. A two-run single by George put the Wildcats ahead for good in the sixth inning. Shutte would finish the game for the Wildcats, securing her tenth win of the season.

The next game for the Wildcats will be on Tuesday, April 23rd as they head across the river to face Augsburg University at 4:30 and 6:30.
