Wildcats drop game two against Pipers Thursday

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wildcats of St. Catherine and Pipers of Hamline returned to St. Kate's Field Thursday evening to complete the final three innings of game two started on April 3. At that time, the game was halted due to darkness in the bottom of the 4th inning, knotted up at 4-4. In the final 2.5 innings played, Hamline was able to break the tie in the top of the 7th finishing the game with a score of 6-5 Pipers. On April 3, St. Catherine topped the Pipers in the first game-winning 5-4 in 10 innings.

The first four innings played on April 3 began with St. Kate's taking the one-run lead as senior Anna Hinderaker scored first in the bottom of the opening inning. The conference matchup was tied three times throughout the game with the first tie happening in the top of the second when Hamline scored their first run of the game. 

The Pipers scored in the top of the 3rd holding the one-run lead when junior Amber Montero hit a three run homerun driving in Hinderaker and sophomore Mikayla Grant for a score of 4-2 Wildcats. 

Hamline tied the game for the second time in the top of the fourth inning with darkness as a threat. The Pipers crossed the plate twice on two different plays in the inning. 

Returning today to complete the game, St. Kate's started out at the plate with senior Trish Sherman as the first at-bat. Sherman went on to score the first run of the game taking the lead brought in by Hinderaker. 

The Pipers tied the game for the final time in the top of the sixth scoring their fifth run off a sac-fly with one out and bases loaded. The final run of the game was in the top of the seventh when the Pipers had two on base and the pitcher hitting a sac fly to center field to drive in the winning run.

First-year Annabelle Schutte appeared in the circle for 5.1 innings tallying five runs on nine hits and three strikeouts. Sophomore Kathryn Proper relieved Schutte in the top of the sixth allowing the final run, one hit, and two strikeouts. 

Hinderaker had two runs, an RBI and a triple against the Pipers as Montero went 1-2 getting walked one and a three-run home run. 

The Wildcats are home again Friday facing the Bethel Royals at 12 and 2 p.m. St. Kate's and Bethel have dedicated the game to Strikeout Cancer.
