Softball picks up sweep at Concordia on Tuesday

MOORHEAD, Minn. - St. Catherine softball collected two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) wins on the road at Concordia on Tuesday for their third sweep this season. The Wildcats defeated the Concordia College Cobbers 10-4 in game one and 5-1 in the second game of the doubleheader. After today, the Wildcats improve their overall record to 19-8 and 9-2 in the MIAC. 

Game 1 | St. Catherine 10, Concordia 4 
St. Kate's tallied a conference season-high ten runs in game one against the Cobbers with six different players with runs. As the lead-off hitter, junior Amber Montero was the first across the plate when senior Trish Sherman hit a three run double. Sherman drove in rookie Alex Ehde and sophomore Alyssa Wicks in addition to Montero to take an early 3-0 in the top of the first. 

The Wildcats earned runs number 4 and 5 when Ehde hit a sac-fly to right field advancing Montero to third and bringing in first-year Lindsay Burr earning the RBI. Montero scored again after senior Jenna George hit a single down the third baseline. 

The Cobbers scored in the bottom of the second inning with two unearned runs to end the inning 5-2 St. Kate's. 

In the top of the fifth inning, St. Kate's scored three additional runs to take the five-run lead. The Wildcats final two runs came in the top of the sixth inning taking an eight-run lead. The Cobbers scored their final two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for a final of 10-4. 

Sophomore starting pitcher Kathryn Proper earned the win in game one with five innings in the circle. Proper allowed only three hits and two runs against the Cobbers, striking out seven. Proper has a season total of 85 strikeouts this season averaging 6.03 per game with a 2.06 ERA. 

Sherman, Montero and first-year Kaitlyn Backman each had a double in game one. Montero leads the team this season in doubles tallying her first of two on the day in the first game. Sherman had a game high 3 RBI. 

Game 2 | St. Catherine 5, Concordia 1
St. Kate's scored five more runs in game two of the MIAC doubleheader at Concordia. Things got started right away for the Wildcats again as Montero crossed the plate first in the top of the first inning. 

The Cobbers answered back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game 1-1. 

The game remained scoreless for three innings until the top of the fourth when first-year Olivia Beaulieu hit a single to left center to drive in Wicks and Backman . Beaulieu scored the fourth run off Montero's 13th double of the season. 

The final run of the day was scored in the top of the sixth inning when Ehde drove in Burr reaching first on fielder's choice. 

First-year Annabelle Schutte pitched the complete game for St. Kate's collecting her eighth win this season. Schutte allowed three hits and one run walking two Cobbers. The rookie added seven strikeouts to her season total of 46. The rookie is averaging a total of 4.22 strikeouts per game with a 2.38 ERA. 

St. Catherine is home Thursday, April 16 to complete the final 2.5 innings against Hamline. The Wildcats and Pipers completed game one of the conference series on April 3 and played the first 4.5 innings of game two before the game was halted due to darkness. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at St. Kate's Field.
