Softball drops two games to UW-Lacrosse Friday

AUSTIN, Minn. - The St. Catherine softball team hosted their first doubleheader of the 2019 season in Austin, Minn. on Friday evening. The Wildcats'  took on non-conference foe University of Wisconsin-La Crosse dropping game one 3-1 and game two 5-1. St. Catherine is now 4-4 this season just two weeks away from their spring break series in Florida. 

GAME 1 | St. Catherine 1, UW-La Crosse 3
St. Catherine sophomore standout Mikayla Grant led the Wildcats' in game one vs. the Eagles going 2 for 3 and bringing the lone RBI of the game. Grant's RBI came in the 2nd inning hitting her first of two doubles driving in first-year Angela Huepfel to tie the game 1-1. 

The Eagles second and third runs were in the top of the 5th inning to take the two run lead with two outs. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Grant doubled again to put first-year Lindsay Burr into scoring position at third. The Wildcats' were unable to get the runs though as Burr was out at home for the third out of the inning. 

St. Kate's kept the momentum in the final inning but were unable to get themselves in scoring position to overcome the two run lead by the Eagles. 

Sophomore pitcher Kathryn Proper threw 42 strikes in 67 pitches facing 31 batters and allowing six hits. 

GAME 2 | St. Catherine 1, UW-La Crosse 5
Game two started out with the Eagles on the board first again taking the early one run lead in the first inning. St. Kate's answered back again the the 2nd inning with sophomore Alyssa Wicks hitting a double to left field to drive in Huepfel to tie the game 1-1. Huepfel was 1-2 with one run and a double in the top of the 2nd. 

The Eagles took a two run lead over the Wildcats' in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1. They scored two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning for the final score of 5-1 in 7 innings. 

First-year Annabelle Schutte was the in the circle of St. Kate's in game two allowing 9 hits for a game ERA of 2.33. 

St. Catherine will return to action when they travel to Clermont, Florida on March 24. The Wildcats' will have eight games over the spring break trip facing University of Chicago first at 3:45 PM EST.
