CLERMONT, Fla. - The St. Catherine University softball team went 1-1 on opening day of The Spring Games Sunday. The Wildcats' captured a win over the University of Chicago 5-4 before falling to Massachusetts Institution of Technology 4-3.
GAME 1 St. Catherine 4, University of Chicago 3
The University of Chicago Maroons took an early lead over the Wildcats going up three runs in the opening inning of the game. The Maroons added another run to their tally in the top of the 2nd inning for what would be their last run of the game.
St. Kate's round their momentum in the bottom of the 2nd as senior
Jenna George was the first Wildcat to score after sophomore
Alyssa Wicks drove her in on a sac-fly.
Sophomore
Mikayla Grant collected the Wildcats' second run in the bottom of the 3rd inning with junior
Amber Montero brining her in on a sac-fly to left field.
Down two runs headed into the bottom of the 5th inning, St. Kate's first-year shortstop
Alex Ehde tallied the Wildcats 3rd run on a passed ball.
It was senior
Anna Hinderaker though who led the Wildcats' to the win with a single to to center field and advancing to second on a throw bringing in senior
Trish Sherman and Wicks. Hinderaker was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's in the 5-4 game.
First-year pitcher
Annabelle Schutte was in the circle for St. Kate's first game facing 32 batters with 2 strikeouts. Schutte's record this season is 2-2.
GAME 2 St. Catherine 3, MIT 4
The Wildcats opened game two against the Engineers taking an early 2-0 lead credited to big hits from George and Ehde.
Montero scored the first run for the Wildcats in the top of the 1st inning off of a double to left center from George for the early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore
Emily Saurer got things started off in the top of the second inning stealing second to get in scoring position after hitting a single to left field. Grant advanced to 2nd on a throw after hitting a single moving Saurer to 3rd but was out at home.
Grant advanced to 3rd off a wild pitch with Ehde up at bat. The first-year standout hit a double to bring Grant in and get the 2-run advantage over MIT.
The Engineers first run of the game came in the bottom of the 2nd inning bringing the score to 2-1 early in te game.
St. Kate's took the 2-run lead again in the top of the 4th as George drove in Hinderaker with a sacrifice fly to center field for a score of 3-1. The RBI from George proved to be the Wildcats' final tally of the game.
St. Catherine held the lead until errors got the best of the them in the bottom of the 6th, as MIT took the 4-3 lead with two unearned runs with 3 errors total in the inning.
Sophomore
Kathryn Proper pitched 5 innings for St. Kate's against the Engineers facing 27 batters allowing 8 hits and 4 runs.
The Wildcats offense had 13 hits and 3 runs in the one-run loss.
St. Kate's (5-5) returns to the field Monday, March 25 at 8:30 a.m. CT against the University of Wisconsin-Stout followed by a game at 11 a.m. CT against Elmhurst College.
