Hockey set for nonconference showdown at Northland

ASHLAND, WIS. – For the past 10 days, the St. Catherine University hockey team has been able to rest and recharge its batteries, so to speak. Now, though, the time to rest, relax, and recover is officially over as St. Kate's returns to the ice Tuesday night for a 5 p.m. game against Northland College.

This is the first meeting in either program history between the Wildcats and Lumberjills, as Northland is in its first season as an NCAA sanctioned women's hockey program. Currently, the Lumberjills have an overall record of 1-12-0 and are in the process of becoming a member of the neighboring National Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).

On the flip side, St. Kate's holds a 5-7-0 record and is 2-4-0 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. The Wildcats are also looking to get back in the win column after suffering a tough 3-1 loss in their last game against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on December 31.

Those who want to tune into the game can watch online via Northland College Athletics. Fans can also check for score updates on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@StKatesWildcats).

Here are the five things to know before tonight's 5 p.m. puck drop in Ashland, Wisconsin:

28 – While the Wildcats have enjoyed a 10 day break, the Lumberjills have not played hockey in 28 days. Northland's last game was on December 13 when it hosted Concordia College in the first home game in program history. The Lumberjills lost that game 2-0.

3 – While the Wildcats have enjoyed plenty of time off, this week promises to be the team's busiest of the 2016-17 season. St. Kate's will play three hockey games in five days, including a home-and-home series against Gustavus Adolphus College this upcoming Friday and Saturday.

4 – Northland has played four teams from the MIAC this season, not including St. Kate's. The Lumberjills opened the season with a two-game series against the College of Saint Benedict and since then has faced Augsburg College, Bethel University and Concordia.

.500 – St. Kate's currently holds a 4-4 record against nonconference opponents this season, having splits its opening series against Lake Forest College and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Wildcats also earned a 4-2 nonconference win over Finlandia University in December before the 3-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire. St. Kate's game against Northland will be the final nonconference game for the team this season.

30 – The Wildcats have scored 30 goals this season while surrendering just 31 to their opponents. Sophomore forward Laken Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) leads the team in goals (5), points (12) and shots (41) while senior forward Jordan Solheim (Thief River Falls, Minn. / Thief River Falls) leads the team in assists (8).
