ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team with punch for punch with No. 7 ranked Hamline University on Friday evening at Drake Arena. The MIAC match up saw 14 goals scored between the two teams as St. Kate's fell 8-6.
The Wildcats struck first just 1:27 into the opening frame when
Rhiannon Ashworth finished a set up from
Lilly Gillespie to make it 1-0. Hamline answered at 7:02, but St. Kate's grabbed momentum back late in the period when
Samantha Bogen buried a power-play goal from
Lauren Schmidt at 13:35 to send the Wildcats to intermission up 2-1.
The second period turned into a scoring battle with Hamline scoring twice on the power play early to flip the score 3-2. St. Kate's responded with a goal from
Halle Dunleavy at 12:26 followed by Gillespie's goal at 14:47 to keep it tied. The teams traded again late, and Hamline carried a 5-4 edge into the third after a goal at 15:05.
Gillespie scored her second of the night 2:42 into the third to erase the deficit quickly with help from
Paige Loidolt and
Sara Cooney knotting it at 5-5. The Pipers regained the lead on a power-play at 4:10, then delivered the game-winner at 8:52 on another power play.
Isabel Burt pushed back scoring at 10:20 from
Ellie Skaja to make the scored 7-6 but the Pipers restored the two-goal cushion 27 seconds later for the win.
Gillespie led with two goals and an assist while Ashworth, Bogen, Dunleavy and Burt all tallied one goal. Lea Grassisa made 29 saves in net and
Sara Cooney has a multi-point game adding assists on Dunleavy and Gillespie's goals.
St. Kate's travels to Tria Rink on Saturday to face the Pipers at 3 pm. They return to Drake Arena on Friday, February 21 hosting the College of St. Scholastica at 6 pm for Senior Day.
