Hockey hosts Concordia in MIAC showdown

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University hockey team has already proved it's going to be a team to be reckoned with this 2016-17 season. After two hard fought games against Augsburg College last weekend, the Wildcats are still looking for their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season. This weekend, St. Kate's will have another chance at its first conference win, this time against Concordia College.

The Wildcats also have an advantage this weekend, as both games against the Cobbers will take place in the comforts of Drake Arena. Last season, St. Kate's traveled to Fargo, North Dakota to play Concordia in a two game road series, where the team was shut out 1-0 in the first game and 3-0 in the second. This year, the Cobbers are the team that has to do the traveling and the Wildcats get to stay and prepare from the comforts of home.

Saturday's game will begin at 7 p.m. at Drake Arena and Sunday's game will begin at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games and score updates will be made on St. Kate's official Twitter account (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before puck drop between the Wildcats and Cobbers:

6 – Defender Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) currently leads the team in points (6) and assists (4) and is tied for the team lead in goals (2).

211 – St. Kate's is the No. 1 ranked team in the MIAC in saves this season. The Wildcats goalies have made a combined 211 saves and face an average of over 30 shots a game.

5 – Wildcats goalie Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis. / Chequamegon) currently ranks in the top-5 in the MIAC in multiple statistical categories. She currently ranks fourth in the MIAC in save percentage (.936) and is second in saves with 132. Her teammate Abbi White (Wyoming, Minn./ Forest Lake) is also one of the top goalies in the conference, as she ranks second in save percentage (.940).

1 – Pechacek and White are not the only two goalies that rank toward the top of the conference. Concordia netminder Andrea Klug leads the conference in win percentage (.875) and is tenth in the conference in goals against average (2.98).

13 – The Cobbers scored 13 goals in their two-game series against the College of Saint Benedict last weekend. However, while Concordia showed its highly potent offense in its MIAC opener, it also allowed eight goals in 120 minutes of play.
