The St. Kate's hockey team opened the season with a convincing 4-0 win over Finlandia University. The Wildcats top two scorers from last season,
Michaela Michaelson and
Cassie Rooney, picked up right where they left off last season. Michaelson had two goals and one assist, while Rooney notched one goal and two assists.
First year
Randi Weinzierl got the Wildcats on the board quick as she scored her first collegiate goal at the 4:47 mark in the first period.
Jessica Feltes and
Ashley Tilton assisted on the power play goal that what turned out to be the game winner.
At the 16:04 mark of the first period Michaelson took advantage of another power play situation, and put St. Kate's ahead 2-0 at the first intermission. Rooney and
Megan Boehmer assisted on the goal.
In the second period Rooney put her first puck into the net this season.
Katie Lawler and Michaelson assisted on the short-handed goal that put the Wildcats ahead 3-0 at the second intermission.
Just :08 seconds into the third period Michaelson scored again to close out the scoring for the game. Rooney picked up her second assist on the play.
The WIldcats went 2 for 6 on power play's on the evening. They also out-shot Finlandia 29-18.
Goalies
Mel Gerten Erica Pitzen and
Kayla Lange combined for the shutout as every Wildcat saw action in the season opener.
