ST. PAUL, MINN. – The season is winding down for the St. Catherine University soccer and volleyball teams. The Wildcats enter the final week of the regular season, as each team will face two big Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents to close out 2017.
Both the soccer and volleyball teams will hit the road Wednesday afternoon, heading to different areas in the state. Soccer will travel to Northfield, Minnesota for a 3:30 p.m. against St. Olaf College, while volleyball heads to Moorhead for a 7 p.m. match against Concordia College.
Fans who are unable to make the journey can follow both teams online Wednesday evening. Soccer's game against the Oles will be live streams through St. Olaf, while both live stats and video will be available during volleyball's match. Score updated will also be made on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).
Here are the five facts to know before this afternoon:
14 – Both St. Olaf and St. Kate's are vying for spots in the MIAC Women's Soccer Playoffs, set to take place next week. The Oles already clinched their spot last week and will be one of six teams participating in the tournament, while the Wildcats are hoping to solidify their place Wednesday afternoon with a win or tie. Currently, St. Kate's is in a three-way tie for fourth place with Saint Ben's and Gustavus with 14 points, while St. Olaf is in sole possession of second place with 19 points.
10 – The Wildcat volleyball team recorded 10 total blocks in a 3-1 loss to Hamline last Saturday.
Hannah Flatness (Elk Mound, Wis. / Elk Mound) led the team with six block assists, while
Libby Kreuser (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Totino-Grace) and Kelly Beuer (St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix) added four and three block assists respectfully. This season, St. Kate's ranks second in the MIAC in block assists (107) and fourth in total blocks (67)
20 – The Wildcats scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of play last season to beat St. Olaf 2-1. Former student-athletes
Hannah Okerstrom (Stillwater, Minn. / Bayport) and
Nicole Palsgrove (Maple Grove, Minn. / Wayzata) scored in the second half of the game to lift the Wildcats to victory. Okerstrom scored on a cross from
Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. /North St. Paul), while Palsgrove provided the game-winner on a corner kick in the 78
th minute.
3-0 – St. Kate's will face a formidable opponent in Concordia Wednesday night. The Cobbers are coming off their biggest win of the season, upsetting No. 11 Gustavus Adolphus College in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 26-24). Last season, Concordia swept the Wildcats 3-0 in Moorhead, Minnesota.
180 – St. Kate's 3-0 loss to Gustavus on Saturday broke the team's 180 minute shutout streak. In the Wildcats last four games, not counting Gustavus, goalkeepers
Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) and
Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) had given up just one goal in 450 minutes of play, marking one of the longest active shutout streaks in school history.
