For the second-consecutive weekend, the St. Catherine University volleyball team had solid performances in tournament play and finished 3-1 after falling to Saint Mary's University 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-17) before shutting out the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) Saturday at the Ripon College Tournament in Ripon, Wisconsin.
"We played Saint Mary's much better (today than Wednesday)," said Head Caoch
Corey Phelps whose squad fell to the Cardinal in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener just three days ago. "We needed to finish the first set, but we still played more like we know how to than Wednesday. We had a solid 3-0 win over UW-River Falls and took another good step forward this weekend. I am proud of the way we competed and the great energy we had throughout."
In the opening loss to the Cardinals,
Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) had another solid performance with a team-high 10 kills, three digs, three block assists and an ace. She added six kills, three block assists and two service aces in the Wildcats' victory helping her earn all-tournament honors.
Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn./Anoka) led the Wildcats in the victory over the Falcons with a double-double performance collecting 11 kills and 16 digs. The sophomore also had a match-high four service aces.
Payton Baker (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Sabrina Astar (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) both made solid contirbutions for the Wildcats on the day. Baker tallied 13 kills and five digs, while Astar had 10 kills and five block assists.
Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) held down the Wildcats back row with a match-high 28 digs in the win over the Falcons finishing the day with 45 digs.
Johna Radke (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led the Wildcat trio of setters with 30 assists on the day with
Maria Davis (West St. Paul, Minn./St. Agnes) dishing out 16 against Saint Mary's and
Hayley Levenhagen (Pewaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) recording 16 against UW-River Falls.
With the win and the loss, the Wildcats move to 8-4 on the season. The Wildcats return to MIAC action for their home opener against the University of St. Thomas Wednesday evening in the
Butler Center.
