Wildcats reopen MIAC play with 4-1 loss to St. Thomas

Maureen Ryan scored the Wildcats only goal against the Tommies Friday
Box Score Coming off a close 3-2 win over Concordia University (Wis.), the St. Catherine University hockey team faced a tough challenge in reopening Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against a University of St. Thomas squad that hasn't loss a conference game all season. And despite a goal from Maureen Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) for the second-straight game, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to slow down the Tommies in the third period in falling 4-1 Friday evening in Mendota Heights, Minn.

The Tommies started off their scoring surge early as Paige Baldwin scored her first of two goals on goalie Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.) 1:10 into the game. Early in the second, Christina Rozeske gave the Tommies a 2-0 lead and slowly start to pull away.

However, the Wildcats weren't ready to give up yet as Ryan beat Alise Reidel - one of the league's top goaltenders - on assists from Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Alex White (Wyoming, Minn.) to cut the Tommie lead in half.

Unfortunately, though, the Wildcats couldn't find an answer for the Tommies as they scored two goals within 3:21 of each other to hand the Wildcats only their second MIAC loss of the season.

In goal, Geissler stopped 29 Tommie shots, while Ryan's goal was her fourth point in the last three games bringing her season total to five - which is tied for third-most on the team. Rasmussen's assist keeps her the team point leader with eight.

The Wildcats will look to turn the tables on the Tommies Saturday in a 4 p.m. match up on home ice at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
