Wildcats hold off Falcons for 3-2 non-conference win

Alex Hall picked up her third win of the season in goal with 28 saves against Concordia (Wis.)
Box Score In it's final non-conference game before returning to league play next weekend, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped it could come up with a strong win over a Concordia University (Wis.) squad that had lost two games to other Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents this weekend. Despite allowing the Falcons two quick goals in the second period, the Wildcats used several multi-point performances from different players to pull out a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon at Drake Arena in St. Paul.

The Wildcats managed to get on the board first when Bridget Slater let in the first shot she saw in goal for the Falcons. Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn.) skated in untouched for her first collegiate goal after receiving passes from both Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Kira Kuntz (Dickinson, N. D.) at the 6:29 mark.

The Wildcats quickly built their lead to 2-0 when Maureen Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) followed suit with Okerstrom scoring her first goal on Slater 16 minutes into the game. But the Wildcats' lead wouldn't last for long as the Falcons made a goaltending switch and erupted for two goals in the second including a shorthanded goal just over four minutes into the period.

After being shut out by Jennifer DeGeorge in the second period, the Wildcats finally sealed their seventh win of the season when Kuntz battled in front to pick up a rebound goal for her second point of the game giving her team a 3-2 lead 5:55 into the final period of play. Ryan also picked up an assist for her second point of the game. The sophomore has now picked up three points in the Wildcats' last two wins.

In goal, Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.) picked up her third win of the season stopping 28 Falcon shots. Kaylee DeBoer (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) also picked up an assist for the Wildcats. With an assist, Rasmussen leads the Wildcats in points this season with seven, while Kuntz' two-point effort makes her second on the team with six.

The Wildcats improve to 7-4-1 and take a two-game winning streak into next weeks MIAC series with the University of St. Thomas. Game one is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
