Last Friday, the St. Catherine University hockey team used three power play goals to take down Augsburg College on the opening night of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on the road.
The Wildcats had a near repeat evening this Friday, as they managed to use two power play goals to take down Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minn., again by the score of 3-2.
“We were very fortunate to get out of tonight's game with two points,” said Head Coach
Brad Marshall, whose Wildcats had to battle back from going down 1-0 after a short-handed Cardinal goal at the end of the first period.
“We need to find a way to come out and play well right from the start,” said Marshall. Fortunately, the Wildcats were able to find a way to use three-straight goals to hold on for a win.
Halfway through the second period, the Wildcat offense came alive as
Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season on a pass from
Maureen Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Michele McDonald (International Falls, Minn.) to tie the game at one.
Less than two minutes later, junior
Nicki Mosbeck (Emo, Ontario) scored a power play goal, this time from Ryan and
Randi Fabsits (Tinley Park, Ill.), to put the Wildcats up 2-1 heading into the third.
Late in the final period,
Becky Clifton (Imperial, Mo.) scored the eventual game-winning power play goal with help from Rasmussen and
Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) to take a two-goal lead.
However, the Wildcats were tested defensively as the Cardinals managed to score a goal with just over a minute to play and pull within one. The Saint Mary's charge was too little too late though, as the Wildcats managed to hold on for the 3-2 win.
Alex Hall (Bursnville, Minn.) recorded her third-straight win in net for the Wildcats, posting 34 saves in the win. Hall is now third in the MIAC in save percentage (.959) and goals against average (1.14).
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow as they take on Saint Mary's at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn., with puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m.
