After a scoreless first period, St. Kate's took advantage of a St. Mary's checking call and scored 2:50 into the second period on a power play goal by
Kasey Evans (
Hallie Paschke assist). Just over seven minutes later, the Wildcats would again take advantage of a Cardinal penalty to score on consecutive power plays. This time
Bridget Braastad notched the game winning goal (her first of the season), assisted by
Kelsey Abrahamson and
Kayla Clafton.
Head Coach,
Brad Marshall said about the start to the season, "Its great that we're getting more balanced scoring than the first two weekends. So to get goals from two defensemen is huge. We'll need that throughout the year. It was also nice to see our Special Teams come through and contribute after not producing last night. With the season being still somewhat early, we're not putting together 60 minutes of solid metal play. The effort is there at times, but we need to cut down on the mental mistakes. But we'll take our three points on the weekend and start preparing for December."
That would be all the Wildcats would need to improve their record to 4-1-1 (2-1-1 MIAC) on the season. With the loss, St. Mary's falls to 2-3-3 (1-1-2 MIAC).
Each team would add a goal in the third. St. Kate's would add their third straight at 16:08 when
Raelyn Smith scored assisted by
Kasey Evans. SMU would score their lone goal of the competition just over a minute later.
The Wildcats return to the ice December 2 at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, MN at 7:30 p.m.
