Wildcats claw back to win thrilling 3-2 match over Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University volleyball team claimed a thrilling 3-2 win over cross town rival, Macalester College on Saturday evening inside of Butler Center. St. Kate's is now 11-5 overall with an MIAC record of 4-1 to sit in third place. 

Tiffany Tellez added her sixth double-double of the season to her stats with a team best 16 kills and 33 digs plus four aces and two blocks. Maggie Rosen tallied 13 kills and tying her season-high of five blocks. Lexie Petrick had 12 kills and season-high 32 digs. 

The first set started in favor of the Wildcats as they came out strong taking a 13-6 lead early. The Scots inched back knotting it at 17-17 but the Wildcats were able to come away with the set after a four-point run with Petrick at the service line and Claire Segner closing it out 25-19. 

Macalester battled back in the second set getting a five-point advantage over St. Kate's at 16-11. Brenna Essig served the Wildcats to get within two points at 17-15, Scots before the two teams exchanged points through 23-23. Three back to back attack errors from St. Kate's led Macalester to tie the match at 1-1 claiming set two 25-23. 

Set three was back and fourth again with eleven tied scored and six lead changes led by Petrick and Tellez each adding four kills. St. Kate's took the set 27-25 before falling in the fourth set 25-23. 

In the fifth and final set, the Wildcats found a new momentum getting a 13-6 advantage over the Scots. Macalester added one final push to come back but St. Kate's held them off with a 15-9 set win. 

St. Kate's is back at Butler Center on Wednesday, October 11 hosting St. Olaf College at 7 pm.
