ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Catherine soared past the University of Northwestern-St. Paul defeating the Eagles 55-44 in the first game of the 2019-20 season in front of the home crowd.
Rookie guard
Bree Glynn had 13 points and five rebounds plus one assist and one steal. The first-year who had a successful high school career at Totino-Grace was 75 percent from the free throw line with a field goal percentage of 50.
St. Catherine held Northwestern to 13 of 44 (29.5 percent) from the field and forced the Eagles to 20 turnovers in the game. The Wildcats hit just 20 of 51 (39.2 percent) and converted seven of 15 from the free throw line.
The Wildcats points and rebounds leader,
Jackie Radford, added ten points and seven rebounds in the win. Radford had three key steals in the game adding two assists. Sophomore
Mackenzie Kurczek had six points shooting 50 percent from the free throw line and making 2 of 5 field goals.
Off the bench, sophomore
Lauren Isaacson added six points making two clutch three pointers in the third quarter getting the Wildcats back from behind on both shots.
In the first quarter, St. Catherine scored first followed by a quick basket from Northwestern to tie the game early at 2-2. Both teams traded the lead in the first minutes until the Wildcats found themselves with a six point edge over the Eagles. After the first ten minutes, the Wildcats led 17-14.
The Eagles outscored the Wildcats in the second quarter 13 to seven sending St. Catherine into the half trailing by three.
Things were reversed in the third quarter with St. Catherine scoring 14 to the Eagles six points. The Wildcats had five points off of turnovers in the quarter and nine points off the bench. In the final ten minutes of the contest, St. Catherine scored 17 points to the Eagles 11 with the Wildcats running away with the lead with five minutes to play.
The Wildcats open the 2019-20 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season hosting St. Paul rival, the University of St. Thomas at 3 pm.
