Hockey to honor seniors, play Bethel in final weekend

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's been a rollercoaster season for the St. Catherine University hockey team in 2017-18. After starting the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season with a 0-6-0 record, the Wildcats had a resurgence in the second-half of the season, posting a 5-0-1 record in the month of January against conference opponents to put themselves in qualifying position for the MIAC Playoffs. This weekend, St. Kate's will try and solidify its place in the conference standings in its final regular-season series against Bethel University.

In addition to their attempt to clinch a playoff berth, the Wildcats will also honor their four seasons Sara Brakke (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo), Karly Nelson (East Grand Forks, Minn. / East Grand Forks), Anna Carman (Lutsen, Minn. / Cook County) and Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis. / Chequamegon) before Friday's 7 p.m. game.

Live stats will be available for fans who want to tune in Friday, while both live stats and video will be available for Saturday's 3 p.m. puck drop in Blaine, Minnesota. Score updates can also be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before the final MIAC series of the regular season:

4 – The Wildcats magic number for clinching their spot in the MIAC Playoffs is four, the number of points they need in order to jump Saint Mary's and the Royals in the conference standings. With a sweep of Bethel, St. Kate's would move from seventh to fifth place with 15 points, meaning the team would still need at least one Cardinal loss to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

12 – The four Wildcat hockey seniors have earned a combined 12 academic honors during their careers at St. Kate's. Brakke, Nelson, Carman and Pechacek are all two-time Academic All-Conference honorees and all earned Academic honors from the ACHA last season.

3 – The 2018 senior class also contains one of the best goalies in program history. Pechacek holds three school records, including single-season save percentage (.960), single season goals against average (1.36) and career save percentage (.940). She was also just the second player in program history to earn All-America honors as a sophomore in 2015-16 and is a two-time All-MIAC honoree.

28 – Brakke and Nelson have been solid defenders for the Wildcats. In four seasons, the two have played in 185 total games, racking up a combined 25 points with five goals and 20 assists. They've also tallied a few penalties during their esteemed careers. Combined the two seniors have racked up 28 penalties and 58 total penalty minutes.

8 – Carman's best season of her career came as a junior, when she tallied eight points on four goals and four assists. She scored the game-winner in St. Kate's 5-3 victory over Saint Mary's in the final game of the regular season last year and her first collegiate goal came in a 4-1 victory over Saint Ben's her sophomore season.
