ST. PAUL, MINN. – The past weekend was nothing short of exciting for the St. Catherine University hockey team. The Wildcats won their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game of the season and earned their first conference sweep in dominating fashion against St. Olaf. St. Kate's looks to carry its winning momentum into this weekend, as the team takes on Saint Mary's University in a home-and-home series Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
The first game between the Wildcats and Cardinals will take place at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Saint Mary's Ice Arena in Winona, Minnesota. Live stats and video will be available for the first game of the series, and score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).
For game two, St. Kate's will return to Drake Arena for a 2 p.m. puck drop against Saint Mary's. Live stats will be available and score updates will additionally be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's series between the Wildcats and Cardinals:
11 – In one weekend, St. Kate's nearly matched its season goal total, scoring 11 goals in a dominating series against St. Olaf last weekend. In their most explosive offensive performance of the season, the Wildcats scored five goals Friday and six on Saturday en route to 5-3 and 6-2 victories.
5 – A huge part of St. Kate's sudden scoring surge was none other than junior forward Laken Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley), who garnered three awards for her performance throughout the course of the week. Muller tallied five points in the series, with two goals and three assists, and also scored the game-winner in Friday's 5-3 win. More impressively, the junior was named the MIAC's Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week and earned Fleur-de-lis honors from St. Kate's. She also became the first Wildcat in program history named to D3hockey's Team-of-the-Week.
2/17 – While St. Kate's and Saint Mary's are meeting relatively early this year, the two teams didn't meet until the last week of the regular season in 2016-17. Despite being eliminated from MIAC playoff contention two weeks before, the Wildcats dominated in their last series of the regular season, taking both games from the Cardinals with 5-3 and 3-1 victories.
7 – Seven different student-athletes scored for St. Kate's in last year's series, including Muller. The then sophomore tallied two of the Wildcats three goals in the 3-1 victory in Winona. In addition to Muller, Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall), Anna Carman (Lutsen, Minn. / Cook County), Morgan Tentis (Victoria, Minn. / Chanhassen), Lexi Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) and Cassie Thomas all tallied at least one goal against Saint Mary's.
34.8 – St. Kate's goalies Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis. / Chequamegon), Bryce Boreen (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park-Cottage Grove) and Kelsey Miller (Rochester, Minn. / Century) face an average of 34.8 shots per game, the highest average shots faced in the MIAC.
