ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's crunch time for the St. Catherine University volleyball and soccer teams. Both are knee deep in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, and, with just two weeks remaining in the season, are trying to make a move up their respective conference standings.
St. Kate's volleyball kicks off a busy home weekend at 7 p.m. Friday evening, when it hosts Carleton College in the
Butler Center Gym. The night will serve as the first annual "Purple Reign Night" for the Wildcats, who encourage fans to wear purple and come early to get Prince-themed treats from sponsor Menchies.
Saturday, St. Kate's will return to its home court to take on Hamline University at 3 p.m. in another crucial MIAC match. Both games will be streamed live via
video and
live stats, and score updated will be made on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).
Although they are away from home, the Wildcat soccer team is also in for a big weekend. St. Kate's will take on Gustavus Adolphus College at 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minnesota Saturday afternoon. Both teams are looking to clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs, and Wildcat fans can catch all the action via
live stats and
video.
Here are the five facts to know before this weekend's MIAC games:
3 – St. Kate's has posted a 3-1 record in its last four matches with wins over Crown, Macalester and Northland. The Wildcats only loss in the last two weeks came at the hands of St. Olaf, who beat St. Kate's 3-0 in a MIAC match on October 11.
2 – The Wildcats won two games in two days last week, both by a score of 1-0. St. Kate's beat conference rival St. Thomas for the first time in program history thanks to
Maddie Conners (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Hill-Murray) lone goal in the 33
rd minute. Conners also provided the game winner in the team's 1-0 win over UW-River Falls on Monday.
.429 – The Wildcats hit .429 in the opening set against Northland College last Friday, which they won 25-8. St. Kate's compiled 10 kills and hit just one error in 21 attempts, making it the team's best offensive set of the season.
110 – The last time the Wildcats and Gusties faced off was in the quarterfinal round of the MIAC Women's soccer playoffs last season. After 110 minutes of scoreless play, the two teams were knotted in a 1-1 draw and needed a shootout to determine who would advance to take on St. Thomas in the semifinal round.
Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul),
Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck-St. Mary's) and
Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) all made their penalty kicks, sealing St. Kate's 3-1 shootout win.
6 – Sophomore setter
Meagan Schwarzrock (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) compiled 20+ assists in the Wildcats match vs. Northland for the sixth time this season. Schwarzrock tallied 21 assists in the 3-0 win, including eight in the third set.
Bonus number:
4th – After going 1-1 against MIAC opponents last week, St. Kate's soccer team currently sits in a tie for 4
th place in the conference standings. If the season were to end today, the Wildcats would be in the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. The Gusties would be on the outside looking in, as they sit in seventh place behind St. Kate's and Hamline.
