Wildcats win second straight 4-0 at Waldorf

FOREST LAKE, IOWA – Scoring has certainly not been an issue for the St. Catherine University soccer team. This past week alone, the Wildcats have scored eight goals in three games, including back-to-back three-goal game performances. On Monday, St. Kate's high-scoring offense continued to dominate, as the team earned a 4-0 win over Waldorf University.

The Wildcats dominated play from the get go, controlling the ball and generating multiple scoring chances from the minute the clock started to count down. However, the Warriors managed to keep St. Kate's off the board for nearly the entire first half. Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck-St. Mary's) put an end to that at 44:08 in the first half. The junior back booted the ball from the 20 yard line into the back of the net, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead right before halftime.

The one goal was all St. Kate's would have needed to earn the win, as both Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) and Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) were outstanding in goal. However, the Wildcats tacked on three more goals in the second half, including two of the fastest goals scored in program history. After penetrating the ball deep into the Warriors zone, Maddie Conners (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Hill-Murray) extended St. Kate's lead to 2-0 off a cross from junior Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul). Exactly 23 seconds later, the two Wildcats reversed roles, as Machovec scored her third goal of the season off a pass from Conners to extend the lead to 3-0.

St. Kate's wasn't content with a 3-0 lead, though, as Machovec scored her second goal of the game in the 83rd minute. Brittany Kollman (Fergus Falls, Minn. / Kennedy Secondary) chipped the ball over the goalie and found Machovec, who then headed it in for her second goal of the game. The goal, which was Machovec's fourth of the season, was also the team's fourth goal of the net, and secured the team's 4-0 victory.

The Wildcats outshot the Warriors 24-2 in 90 minutes of play, 16 of which were on goal. Machovec led St. Kate's in total points, with two goals and an assist during the game, while Allie Bird (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) led the team in shots with five.

Perez-Adame and Koop earned their second shutout of the season, as both were perfect in 90 minutes of play. Thanks to outstanding defensive play, Perez-Adame did not face a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, while Koop made two saves in the second half.

With the win, the Wildcats overall record improves to 3-4-2 and the team still holds a 2-1-2 mark in MIAC play. St. Kate's will return to competition on Saturday, when it travels to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on Concordia College.
