Siljendahl lifts soccer to 1-0 win at Concordia

MOORHEAD, MINN. – For the past several weeks, scoring certainly has not been an issue for the St. Catherine University soccer team. Since September 23, the Wildcats have scored 12 goals total, and eight of those 12 have been against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents. Saturday, St. Kate's was held to just one goal in 90 minutes of play, but it was enough to earn a 1-0 win over the Concordia College Cobbers.

Both the Wildcats and Cobbers displayed outstanding defense in Saturday afternoon's game in Moorhead, Minnesota. St. Kate's stalwart defense allowed just two shots on goal the entire match, and both times, goalkeepers Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) and Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) were there to make the save. However, the Concordia defense was equally as impressive, as it held the Wildcat offense to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play.

St. Kate's was not deterred by the lack of scoring opportunities in the opening half. The Wildcats challenged the Cobbers defense early in the second half and slowly but surely started to get back to playing their offensive game. Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul) looked like she was about to score the first goal of the game, but Concordia goalkeeper Maddy Reed was there to make the dramatic save and preserve a 0-0 lead.

Reed wasn't so lucky in the 72nd minute. After several minutes of play in the neutral zone, St. Kate's managed to gain control of the ball in the Cobber zone. After a Wildcat shot was deflected out of bounds, the team was awarded a corner kick opportunity. Like it has all season, St. Kate's capitalized on the scoring chance, as Allie Bird (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) found Alyssa Siljendahl (Duluth, Minn. / Hermantown) for the first goal of the game.

It turned out, that one goal was all the Wildcats needed to walk away with the win. St. Kate's defense kept the Cobbers off the board despite back-to-back corner kicks in the 76th minute. After that, neither the Wildcats nor Concordia was able to get a shot off, allowing St. Kate's to leave Moorhead, Minnesota with the 1-0 victory.

Both Koop and Perez-Adame made one save in the game, bringing the team's total to two. More impressively, the goalies earned yet another shutout for St. Kate's, the team's second against a MIAC opponent.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-4-2 overall and have a 3-1-2 mark in MIAC play. St. Kate's will return to the field on Tuesday, when it hosts the College of Saint Benedict at 4 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
