Soccer hosts River Falls in final nonconference game

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Things could not have been more exciting for the St. Catherine University soccer team over the weekend. The Wildcats beat their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), the University of St. Thomas, 1-0 Saturday afternoon, thanks to a goal from sophomore Maddie Conners (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Hill-Murray).

After Saturday's dramatic win, St. Kate's carries winning momentum into Monday afternoon's 3:30 match up against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Fans who are unable to attend the game in person can follow along online via live stats, and score updates can also be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before the Wildcats take on the Falcons Monday:

0 – St. Kate's 1-0 win over St. Thomas on Saturday was nothing short of historic. The Wildcats had never beaten the Tommies in the history of the program, and had been shut out in six of the last seven meetings. In fact, St. Kate's had scored just one goal against St. Thomas in the past five years and were shut out in both meetings in 2016.

33rdFortunately for the Wildcats, Conners put a stop to all that with her goal in the 33rd minute. Conners booted a looping cross from junior forward Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul) to the back of the net for St. Kate's lone goal of the game. That single goal was enough, as the Wildcat defense shut out the Tommie offense in the 1-0 win.

12 – Sophomore goalkeeper Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) played the best soccer of her collegiate career last week. Koop gave up just one goal in 180 minutes of play in two games against MIAC opponents. She also shut out St. Thomas, one of the top offensive teams in the conference, by making six saves in 90 minutes of work, including two SportCenter worthy dives in the final 20 minutes to preserve the shutout.

89:58 – Last season, St. Kate's and UW-River Falls played one of the most intense games of the 2016 season. The game was, literally, decided in the final seconds of play. With two seconds remaining on the clock, Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck-St. Mary's) herded a pass from Alyssa Siljendahl (Duluth, Minn. / Hermantown) and blasted the ball toward the Falcon goal. The ball sored over the head of River Falls goalkeeper Amanda LaDue to secure, what was then, St. Kate's third win of the 2016 season.

97 – Through the first half of the season, the Wildcats have tallied 97 shots in the second half of games this season, one of the highest totals in the MIAC. Thanks to those 97 shots, St. Kate's has scored 11 goals in the second half of games this season, including five in the past three games.
