Soccer heads to Saint Ben's Saturday for key MIAC game

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's been a spectacular September for the St. Catherine University soccer team. The Wildcats went 6-1-1 in the opening month of the 2016 season and hold a 2-0-1 mark in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play.

St. Kate's hopes that winning momentum carries over to October, as it kicks off the month with a key MIAC road game against the College of Saint Benedict Saturday afternoon. Currently, the Wildcats and Blazers are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with seven points apiece, meaning the outcome of the game could have major implications in the MIAC postseason picture.

With the team traveling to St. Joseph, make sure to follow the game online via live stats. Score updates will also be tweeted on St. Kate's Twitter account (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five facts to know before Saturday's 1 p.m. kickoff:

217:00.40 – St. Kate's has played approximately 218 minutes of soccer in its last two games. The Wildcats beat undefeated Elmhurst 2-1 on September 25 with only 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime period thanks to a goal by Iryna Talkachova (Shoreview, Minn. / Shattuck-St. Mary's). St. Kate's followed that up with a 2-1 2OT win over Macalester Wednesday afternoon. Senior forward Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn. / Stillwater) headed the ball into the goal through traffic with two minutes left on the clock in double overtime to clinch the victory.

2 – St. Kate's 2-1 2OT victory over Macalester on Saturday marks just the second time the Wildcats have beaten the Scots in program history. The first time St. Kate's beat Macalester was in 2009, meaning six years passed between the two victories.

21 – The Wildcats have scored 21 goals this season, the fourth most in the MIAC. Okerstrom leads the team in goals (6) and points (16), while Allie Bird (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) is second in both categories with four goals and 10 points.

103 – St. Kate's is outshooting its opponents 103-46 in the second half of games this season. As a result, the Wildcats have been awarded more corner kicks in the second half (37) than their opponents (18) and have scored more goals (12-8) in the final 45 minutes of regulation.

5 – Saint Ben's and St. Kate's scored a combined five goals in last season's game. Down 2-1 after the first half, the Wildcats managed to score the game tying goal with under 25 minutes remaining in regulation. Sadly, the Blazers scored at the 82nd minute mark to win the game 3-2.
