Hockey brings winning momentum to series against Hamline

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University hockey team has been on a roll lately. The offense ignited in their past two series against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents St. Olaf and Saint Benedict. The Wildcats are 3-0-1 in their last four games, including a sweep of the Oles in their home-and-home series two weeks ago.

This weekend, St. Kate's will try and use the momentum from the last two weekends to beat their next MIAC foe, the Hamline Pipers. Here are some staggering numbers from the St. Kate's season to read before puck drop Friday and Saturday:

10 – Number of goals St. Kate's scored in the last four games. Since losing to St. Thomas in the middle of January, the Wildcats offense has come to life. In their home-and-home series against St. Olaf two weeks ago, St. Kate's swept the Oles by scores of 2-1 and 3-1, leading to their first conference wins of the year. The next weekend against Saint Ben's, the Wildcats scored five goals total, with a 1-1 draw on Friday and a 4-1 home victory on Saturday.

.959 – Goalie Kristen Pechacek's (Park Falls, Wis. / Chequamegon) save percentage, which is the best in the conference. The sophomore has been one of the top goalies in the MIAC all season, and she has the stats to back it up. In her 11 starts for the Wildcats this season, the sophomore has made 373 saves and kept 96% of the shots she's faced out of net. She also has a goals-against average of 1.42, which is tied for best in the conference. Her fellow netkeeper is not far behind in either category. Junior goalie Abbi White (Wyoming, Minn. / Forest Lake) ranks seventh in save percentage (.928) and eighth in goals-against average (2.28).

3 – Number of goals St. Kate's scored against Hamline in their first meeting this season. The Wildcats and Pipers met at Drake Arena in early January to open the second half of the season, which the Wildcats won 3-0. While the out didn't count in the conference standings due to being a nonconference game, it was St. Kate's first overall win of 2015-16. Pechacek recorded her second shutout of the season and first shut out win (she was credited with a 0-0 tie against UW-Eau Claire earlier in the season). Allie Guzy Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park ), Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park), and Jordan Solheim (Thief River Falls, Minn. / Thief River Falls) scored the goals for the Wildcats in the victory.

3 – Number of points that separate the Pipers and the Wildcats in the conference standings.  Currently, St. Kate's record is 4-12-5 overall and 3-9-2 in MIAC play. Hamline's record is 8-11-2 over and 5-8-1 in conference play.

3 – Number of Winter Olympics Hamline Head Coach Natalie Darwitz played in. As a member of Team USA, Darwitz played in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games, the 2006 Turin Olympics Games, and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Games. She lead the team in scoring in the '02 games and served as team captain from 2007 until the end of her playing days with team USA. Darwitz was also a three-time All-American during her collegiate career at the University of Minnesota and is widely considered one of the greatest women's hockey players of all time.

Live stats will be available for both games Friday and Saturday night. The first game on Friday will take place across town at Oscar Johnson Arena and is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. On Saturday, St. Kate's will return home to Drake arena for a 6 p.m. puck drop against the Pipers.
