Soccer begins MIAC push against St. Olaf

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University soccer team closed out its nonconference schedule with a 6-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday. Now, with nonconference games behind it, the fun of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) games can begin. The Wildcats will play seven conference games over the next four weeks, and it all begins on Saturday when St. Kate's hosts St. Olaf College at 1 p.m. at St. Kate's Fields.

The Wildcats and Oles are both looking for their first conference win of October as both teams suffered recent losses at the hands of their conference foes. St. Kate's is looking to bounce back in MIAC play after a tough 3-1 loss at Saint Ben's while St. Olaf is looking to win after two disappointing losses to Macalester and St. Thomas.

With the promise of drama, here are the five things to know before tomorrow's game:

6 – The Wildcats scored six goals in a 6-0 win over UW-Superior on Tuesday. Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn. / Stillwater) and Allie Bird (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Gove) each scored two goals while Brittany Kollman (Fergus Falls, Minn. / Kennedy Secondary) and Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) scored their first goals of the season.

0 Jessica Perez-Adame (San Jacinto, Calif. / San Jacinto) did not allow a goal in90 minutes against the Yellow Jackets, earning the first shutout of her career. Perez-Adame is the first goalkeeper in head coach Chris Citowicki's tenure to earn a shutout victory in the first start of her career.

5 – Okerstrom has scored five goals in the Wildcats last three games, accounting for 55% of goals the team has scored in the last two weeks.

1 – St. Kate's scored one goal and needed one overtime period to beat the Oles last season. After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the Wildcats needed an extra 10 to put St. Olaf away. Elly Leyva scored the game winning goal from the left side of the box with under two minutes remaining in the overtime.

1 – The Oles have lost their last two games by just one goal. St. Olaf lost to Macalester 1-0 on October 1 then fell to St. Thomas on Wednesday by the same score.
