Wildcats extend winning streak to 10-straight with sweep of Northwestern (MN)

After a late bout of winter weather postponed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader for the St. Catherine University softball team Wednesday, the talented young squad was eager to return to competition before heading off to Texas for a spring break test Sunday. On a chilly afternoon, the Wildcats extended their school-record winning streak to 10-straight with 16-0 and 8-3 decisions over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Friday in Roseville, Minnesota.

In the opener, Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) earned her fourth win of the season with another solid performance on the mound striking out 12 of the 16 Eagle batters she faced. She allowed just one hit and one walk in her five innings pitched for her third-consecutive shutout performance.

At the plate, the Wildcats were led by Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn./Anoka) who went 3-for-4 in the opener and cranked her first collegiate grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. The first-year also collected a double to open the inning in which the Wildcats plated nine runs.

Prior to Lindenfelser's grand slam, Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) hit her first collegiate home run to drive in three runs before Michaela Bruns (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) launched her fourth of the season in the very next at bat. Woebke also picked up a three-RBI double in the top of the second inning to help the Wildcats find their scoring touch early.

Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) and Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) also picked up doubles and a pair of hits each in the first game. Sis also drove in two runs and crossed the plate twice along with Lindenfelser and Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) who also had two hits. Donielle Kurvers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Caity DeWitt (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi)

Following the game one victory, the Wildcats got the bats going again with Lindenfelser again leading the way. She again went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and three RBI. After giving up a home run to the Eagles on the mound in the bottom of the third inning, Lindenfelser broke the 3-3 tie when she launched her second home run of the day to give the Wildcats back the lead for good.

On the mound, Lindenfelser remained undefeated on the season as she threw 12 strikeouts for her fifth win of the season. She allowed three runs on four Eagle hits and walked four batters.

Flugstad also was hot at the plate in the second game going 3-for-4 with a RBI. Macziewski was 2-for-3 from the plate with a double, while Woebke also picked up her second double of the day. Sis also had two hits and a game-high two runs scored in addition to a RBI. Bruns and Rohr also picked up hits in game two to finish the day with two and three, respectively, on the day.

With the wins, the Wildcats improve to 10-1 on the season. The Wildcats are scheduled to open up at home Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. in St. Paul.
