Softball winning streak ends with 8-4 loss to Our Lady of the Lake

The St. Catherine University softball team started off the season in impressive fashion with a program-best 10-game winning streak after a sweep of the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Friday evening. Hoping to keep the streak going, the Wildcats headed to Texas for spring break for seven games over a four-day time period against strong NCAA Division III and NAIA competition.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, their streak ended with their first NAIA and Texas opponent as they fell 8-4 just several hours after touching down in the South to Our Lady of the Lake University Sunday in San Antonio.

After getting on the board first when Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn./Anoka) hit a RBI double to bring Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) home in the top of the first, the Wildcats found themselves down 6-1 after four innings of play.

The Wildcats began to fight back Michaela Bruns (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) led off the top of the fifth with a double to left center and eventually came across to cut the lead for Our Lady of the Lake to 6-2 when Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) singled to right field.

The Saint added two more in the bottom of the inning before holding the Wildcats scoreless in the sixth. In a final effort to comeback, the Wildcats plated two more runs in the top of the seventh when Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) hit her second homer of the season bringing Bethany Del Real (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) home.

The Wildcat comeback wasn't enough, though, as the young squad suffered just its second loss of the season and first since the opening day of play on March 1.

Rohr and Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) finished the game with two hits a piece, while Donielle Kurvers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Jessi Tyminski (Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace) each add a hit to the Wildcats' 10 hits. Lindenfelser suffered her first loss of the season on the mound allowing six earned runs on five hits.

The Wildcats return to spring break action Monday with a doubleheader against Division III Schreiner University scheduled for 3 p.m. in Kerrville, Texas.
