Wildcats can't find scoring touch in 4-0 loss to UW-River Falls

Danielle Mendez had seven saves in the loss to UW-River Falls
Box Score In it's home opener Friday, the St. Catherine University soccer team couldn't find a way to capitalize on scoring opportunities settling for a tie and hoped to turn things around on the road against UW-River Falls. Unfortunately, it was the same story for the Wildcats as they couldn't find the net or slow down the Falcon attack in suffering a 4-0 road loss Sunday afternoon in River Falls, Wisconsin.

"We started well, but didn't react after going down 2-0 so quickly," said Head Coach Chris Citowicki. "We need to become mentally stronger in moments like that. The second half was better, but not the same St. Kate's team that we are everyday in practice. We can only go up from here."

The Falcons didn't waste any time in getting on the board when Alex Swatloski scored the game winner in just the third minute of play. Just a minute later, Abby Soderholm then made it difficult for the Wildcats to recover when she scored her first of two goals on a direct kick toward Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead less than five minutes in.

With just over five minutes to play in the first half, Carrie Anderson put a Wildcat comeback out of reach putting the Falcons up 3-0. Soderholm added to the lead early in the second half to give the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Mendez stopped seven Falcon shots in goal for the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats couldn't find a way to put their six shots on goal past UW-River Falls goalie Erica Chimochowski.

Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and Julia Zyla (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Trinity School at River Ridge) led the Wildcats offense with two shots on goal each, while Nina Bukowski (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) and Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) posted one a piece.

The Wildcats will look for their first win of the season Wednesday as they take on Crown College at home for a 4 p.m. contest at St. Kate's.
