Soccer falls on last second 2OT goal to St. Thomas

Box Score After hanging with No. 16 ranked Concordia College to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play Tuesday, the St. Catherine University soccer team was hungry for it's first conference and program victory over the University of St. Thomas. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell on a last-second made penalty kick by the Tommies in the second overtime for a 1-0 loss in front of a home crowd Saturday afternoon in St. Paul. 

The Wildcats controlled play for most of the game against a physical Tommie squad with seven shots on goal, while Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) made sevral critical saves to keep the game going. But with 17 seconds remaining, the Wildcats committed a foul in the box to set up a Haley Engel penalty shot for the Tommies. Engel converted with just eight seconds remaining to snatch away a MIAC victory from the Wildcats. 

The Wildcats outshot the Tommies 13-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. In the first half alone, the Wildcats fired six shots toward Tommie goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig who finished the day with a seven-save shutout. Mendez picked up four saves in goal for the Wildcats in addition to several crucial pass interceptions to keep the Wildcats in the game. 

Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) continued to dominate for the Wildcats up from with four and three shots, respectively, with one each making it to the net. Hannah Brown (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) also had two shots with one on goal to help the Wildcats offensively. 

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 1-4-1 on the season and 0-2 in the MIAC. They return to non-conference action Tuesday with a 5 p.m. at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
