Wildcats drop 2-1 heart breaker to Cobbers in OT to end MIAC Playoff run

Bailey Rasmussen scored the lone Wildcat power play goal in the 2-1 MIAC playoff loss to Concordia
Box Score After getting shut ouot in both regular season games to Concordia College last weekend, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped it could find its scoring touch in a rematch with the Cobbers in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs. Despite scoring a power play goal to take a 1-0 lead in the second period, the Cobbers managed to end the Wildcats' postseason run taking the 2-1 decision in overtime Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.

After the loss, Head Coach Brad Marshall was happy with the effort the Wildcats put forward in recovering from last week's disappointing losses. "I feel sorry for the players," said Marshall. "The played so well and were so determined. After having multiple goals waived off, the only thing I could say to my palyers was 'I'm sorry you had to go through that.'"

The Wildcats skated to a scoreless first period against the Cobbers after seeing a goal waived off near the close of the opening 20 minutes of the game. But the Wildcats came out strong in the second period and took advantage of a power play opportunity to break the tie when Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) broke her month long scoreless streak to beat goalie Madison Denny at 8:55 in the second.

The Wildcats' lead didn't last for long, though, as Amber Schaak beat Wildcat goalie Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.) at 13:22 of the second to even the score at one a side. The two teams would then go scoreless in the final regulation pweriod to force overtime.

One of the league's top defense in scoring in Libby Fransdal finally broke the deadlock 2:55 into extra minutes to give th Cobbers their 13th win of the season and the chance to play in the MIAC semifinals Saturday against No. 1 seed University of St. Thomas.

Rasmussen's goal was her sixth power play goal, which is tied for the most in the MIAC this season. She ends the 2013-14 season as the Wildcats' leading scorer with 12 points and nine goals.

Hall finished her final game as a Wildcat with 28 saves in goal and ends her senior season with a 6-7-1 record. Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) picked up her 11th point of the season with an assist on Rasmussen's goal, while Solheim added an assist for her ninth point of her rookie campaign.

The Wildcats' playoff appearance was their second-consecutive trip to the MIAC postseason and third in five years under Marshall's leadership. The Wildcats finish the season with an 11-14-1 record.
