Wildcats can't find scoring touch in 4-0 loss to Concordia

Zoe Verkerke battles for a puck against the Cobbers
Box Score After losing the chance for the No. 4 seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs with a Friday night loss to Concordia College, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped it could end the regular season with a win. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were again shut out by the Cobber defense and fell 4-0 Saturday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn.

The Wildcats' special teams were less than stellar as they allowed the Cobber three power play goals on six opportunities and came up empty handed on all six opportunities of their own. The Wildcats matched the Cobbers' 32 shots, but couldn't find a way to get past Andrea Klug who earned the Cobbers a second shut out to end the weekend.

The Cobbers got on the board late in the first period on a goal from Bri Flynn at 15:49 when she beat goalie Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.). The Cobbers then added another in the second period at 9:20 on a tally from Natasha Skala. Then, Libby Fransdal put a Wildcat comeback out of reach when she scored just 1:59 into the third to give the Cobber a 3-0 victory bedore Madison Gendreau added a fourth en route to the Cobbers' 11th MIAC win of the season.

Geissler tallied 24 saves for the Wildcats, while Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) led the team with six shots on goal. Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn.) had five and Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn.) had four.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-9-1 in the MIAC and will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAC playoffs. The University of St. Thomas clinched the regular season championship and No. 1 seed. Playoff information can be found on the MIAC playoff site

The Wildcats will face the Cobbers again next Friday in the MIAC quarterfinal game. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
