Three power play goals lift Wildcats to 4-0 win for sweep of Saint Benedict

Box Score After picking up a solid win against the College of Saint Benedict Friday night, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped it could repeat with a win to sweep the Blazers and remain near the top of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings. The Wildcat offense came alive on the power play going 3-for-5 on the day to score a 4-0 win and MIAC series sweep of the Blazers Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena in St. Paul. 

"I thought we played some of our best hockey in the middle 20 minutes," said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "It was nice to see the way we won battles and went to the net. We'll enjoy this weekend and prepare for Bethel University next weekend." 

After ending her scoring drought Friday night, Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) capped off a much-improved weekend with the the eventual game-winning power play goal at the 7:58 mark of the first period. The junior battled in front of Blazer goalie Kaitlyn Rolando to score her eighth goal of the season. With the goal Rasmussen leads the MIAC in game-winners (5), is second in power play goals (5) and leads the team in points (10). 

The Wildcats entered the second-period with a 1-0 lead, but added insurance early when Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn.) blasted a shot from the blue line to give the Wildcats another power play goal and the 2-0 lead. Jordan Solheim (Thief River Falls, Minn.) then added a third power play tally at 7:32 when she picked up a loose puck in front to boost the Wildcats' lead to three. 

Less than five minutes later, Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn.) would add her second goal of the weekend on a pass from Ryan to give the Wildcats a 4-0 they would hold onto for teh remainder of the game. Okestrom finished the weekend with three points to boost her season total to seven. 

Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.) earned her fourth win of the season and first shutout of the year with a 25-save effort in goal for the Wildcats. Fabsits and Ryan finished the game with two points a piece. Ryan is tied for sixth in the MIAC among defense in points with six, while Fabsits ranks in the top 20 with four. Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) picked up an assist on Rasmussen's goal to also finish the weekend with two points. 

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-3-1 in the MIAC and 9-6-1 overall. Next week, the Wildcats battle Bethel with game one of the series slated for Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Schwan's Super Rink in Baline, Minn. Saturday, puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Drake Arena.
