The St. Catherine University hockey team desperately  needed to find a way to come away with points in its rematch with the University of St. Thomas to keep its playoff hopes alive.

After a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss at home Friday evening, the Wildcats settled for a 2-2 tie with the Tommies in another overtime game, Saturday afternoon in Mendota Heights, Minn.

The game opened up with another scoreless first period, but the Wildcats took control early in the second as Kasey Evans (Burnsville, Minn.) scored an unassisted tally on Tommie goalie Alise Reidel at the 1:03 mark to take a 1-0 lead into the third.

After going 0-for-6 on the power play Friday evening, the Wildcats were finally able to generate some action on the advantage as Kira Kuntz (Dickinson, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Hallie Paschke (New Prague, Minn.) and Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn.) to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the 11:19 mark in thr third period.

The Wildcats appeared as though they might take a game from the second-place Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Tommies, but Hannah Burns scored an unassisted goal for the Tommies to pull her team within one with just over six minutes to play.

With victory in sight, the Wildcats couldn't hold off the Tommies as Megan Juricko beat Wildcat goalie Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.) with just 32 seconds to play in regulation to force overtime. Despite Geissler's impressive 36-save performance, the Wildcats would have to settle for a tie.

With the tie, the Wildcats improve to 5-7-2 in the MIAC standings. Their 12 points is currently sixth and just one spot out of the final playoff spot. With two weeks reminaing in the season, the young team is still alive in the playoff hunt.

The Wildcats will take on a 2-10-2 Hamline University squad next weekend in two must-win games. The series opens up at Drake Arena Friday evening at 7 p.m.
