Hockey picks up first win of season with 2-1 decision over UW-Eau Claire

Alex Hall recorded 39 saves in the Wildcats' 2-1 win over UW-Eau Cliare Saturday
Box Score After getting shutout on four power play opportunities in game one versus UW-Eau Claire Friday night, the St. Catherine University hockey team took full advantage of its power plays in game two as they scored two goals en route to a 2-1 victory for its first win of the 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire, Wis.

"This weekend was a good test for us," said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "Today was better, but we can still improve this week in practice. Heading into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play next weekend we want to improve our scoring opportunities more throughout the game.

"Today, I thought Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.) played well and our special teams contributed like they're supposed to."

In goal, Hall was spectacular stopping 39 of 40 shots from the Blugolds to pick up her first win of the season, while offensively the Wildcats saw contibutions from a number of players.

Saturday's rematch started much like Friday night as the Wildcats skated to a scoreless tie in the first period. But this time, the Wildcats were able to score first as Kira Kuntz (Dikinson, N.D.) netted her first goal of the season 3:41 into the second period on the power play with assists from Kasey Evans (Burnsville, Minn.) and Annie Buttermore (Mahtomedi, Minn.).

In the third period, the Wildcats struck early to build their lead to two goals when the Wildcats' leading goal scorer from last season Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) netted her first of 2013-13 on the power play from Laurel Prodahl (Buffalo, Minn.) and Kaylee DeBoer (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) at 4:55.

The Blugolds made a last ditch effort to come back as Tory Heller scored a power play goal with just over three minutes to play to cut the Wildcats' lead to 2-1. But it was too little too late as the Wildcats' were able to hang on and improve to 1-2-0 on the season.

The Wildcats return to action next Friday as they open MIAC play against Hamline University at the Warner Coliseum in St. Paul. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
