Hockey settles for 2-2 tie with Hamline

Shleby Salmonsen scored a short-handed goal in the Wildcats' 2-2 tie with Hamline Saturday
Box Score After taking down Hamline University Friday night on the road to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a win, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped it could find a way to complete the sweep at home. Despite having a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the third, the Wildcats couldn't hold and settled for a 2-2 tie with the Pipers Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena in St. Paul.

"It's disappointing the way the game turned out for us," said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "We got caught up in the extras way too much today. That's not our game. We took one penalty Friday night and then decided to change our style of play this afternoon. That's also disappointing."

After taking just one penalty in game one of the series, the Wildcats tallied seven penalties and allowed the Pipers four power play chances as opposed to just three chances for the Wildcats with a one-skater advantage.

The game opened with a scoreless first period with shots and game play in favor of the Wildcats. The Wildcats then found themselves down a skater just over halfway through the second, but took advantage of a two-on-one situation as Shelby Salmonsen (Faribault, Minn.) scored a short-handed goal on a pass from Laurel Prodahl (Buffalo, Minn.) to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

After killing off a five-minute penalty, the Wildcats quickly found a way to build their lead in the third period as Randi Fabsits (Tinley Park, Ill.) scored her first of the season with a rifling shot from the blue line to beat Hamline goalie Sam Stark. Fabsits' power play goal on a set up from Annie Buttermore (Mahtomedi, Minn.) gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

However, the Pipers took advantage of a power play opportunity at the 10:42 mark in the third period as Jordan Verleye scored her first of the season on a pass from Corrine Henning and Jenny Magill to pull the Pipers within one.

Less than four minutes later, Jaci Reinke beat Wildcats' goalie Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.) on a pass from Magill to even the game at 2-2 and force extra minutes. After skating to a scoreless overtime period, the Wildcats finish the weekend with three conference points and are now 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the MIAC.

Hall finished the day with 26 saves in goal, while Prodahl now leads the Wildcats this season with four points  after picking up the assist on the short-handed goal. Her four assists are also tied for second-most among all MIAC players. The Wildcats return to action Friday as they host Augsburg College at 7 p.m. at Drake Arena.
