After dropping two-straight games to the College of St. Scholastica, the St. Catherine University hockey desperately needed a non-conference win before returning to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against No. 2 nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College next weekend.
The Wildcats escaped the Concordia University (Wis.) Falcons with a 2-1 win thanks to a 34-save performance from goalkeeper
Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.), Saturday evening at Drake Arena.
“Hall was the difference in the third (period),” said Head Coach
Brad Marshall after the much-needed Wildcat win.
“I was happy with how our top line played. We need games like this from them.”
The Wildcats got just what they needed from their top-scorer this season,
Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.), when she broke the scoreless tie at the 2:53 mark of the second period for her sixth goal of the season.
The Wildcats would build their lead to two when
Laurel Prodahl (Buffalo, Minn.) beat Falcons' goalie Jennifer DeGeorge with just over five to play.
The Falcons continued to battle, though, in the third as they outshot the Wildcats 15-9 and scored a power play goal with 20 seconds remaining in the game. It was too little too late for the Falcons as they couldn't find an answer for the strong play of Hall in net for the Wildcats.
Randi Fabsits (Tinley Park, Ill.) and
Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) each recorded an assist and four shots on goal for the Wildcats, while
Zoe Verkerke (Menominee, Mich.) and
Katie Jirik (Northfield, Minn.) also picked up assists.
With the win, Hall improves to 5-1 starting this season and the Wildcats improve to 8-5 overall. Gustavus will host the Wildcats for game one of the two-game series, Friday night at 7 p.m., in St. Peter, Minn.
