After dropping a tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game to Bethel earlier in the week, the St. Catherine University soccer hoped to recover with a victory over Augsburg at home Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Wildcats came up short in a 4-1 loss to the Auggies.
“I'm happy with the way we played,” said
Chris Citowicki. “We played very well in the first half and we're working very hard. We're just not getting the results we hoped for.”
The Wildcats started out with a goal from
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif.), who floated a ball just inside the cross bar to put her team up 1-0 less than 18 minutes into the first half.
Senior Leisl Wolf (Minnetonka, Minn.) set up the dynamic first-year forward with her fifth goal of the season. Leyva now leads the team with 13 points and put up two shots on goal on the day.
Despite taking an early lead, the Wildcats couldn't hold on as Bri Clark scored for Augsburg just two minutes after Leyva to tie the game at one a piece.
Though the Wildcats headed into the half with a tie, the Auggies came out strong and scored two goals less than a minute apart early in the second half to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats battled hard through out the game, but couldn't find an answer for the offensively-charged Auggies who outshot the Wildcats 16-9 and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks throughout the game.
Christina Paik (Beaverton, Ore.) and
Morgan Worley (Woodbury, Minn.) each added two shots in the game for the Wildcats. Following the loss, the Wildcats fall to 2-3-0 in MIAC play and 6-4-0 overall.
St. Catherine takes a break from MIAC action as the team travels to St. Bonafacius, Minn., to take on Crown College for an afternoon match up, Tuesday, Oct. 2.
