So far this season, the St. Catherine University soccer team has shown resilience in fighting back to win games after being down or giving up goals. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to find a way to comeback Wednesday afternoon, despite a late game offensive surge, suffering a 3-2 to Bethel at home.
“We did not play our game,” said Head Coach
Chris Citowicki. “Credit goes to Bethel for playing so well and for coming out with a great fighting spirit.”
Bethel came out strong and controlled play for the first half scoring a goal in the game's 24th minute and outshooting the Wildcats 7-3.
After finding themselves down 2-0, the Wildcats found a little life as
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif) found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, just 23 seconds after the Royals took a two-goal lead in the 55th minute.
After Anne Fazio put the Royals up 3-1 with less than 20 minutes in the game, the Wildcats fired three shots at Bethel goalkeeper Kathryn McGaffey in a two-minute span before
Lensa Gurmessa (Minneapolis, Minn.) finally put away her third goal of the year, thanks to help from
Christina Paik (Beaverton, Ore.) and
Liesl Wolf (Minnetonka, Minn.).
Gurmessa's goal, which came with less than nine minutes to play, wasn't enough to comeback after being down the whole game.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 6-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
“If you don't do what you're supposed to do, you're not going to win games,” said Citowicki, “but this is definitely a great lesson for us to learn. We'll bounce back. I know the team is just as eager to get back on the field as we are as coaches.”
The Wildcats return to action for another home game against Augsburg, Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.
