Soccer shuts out St. Olaf in 1-0 win on Hall of Fame day

Paik netted her fifth goal of the season in the Wildcats 1-0 win
Box Score
Playing in front its largest crowd of the season as part of the St. Catherine University Atheltic Hall of Fame celebration Saturday , the Wildcat soccer team had a lot to prove after suffering a 1-0 set back back to St. Thomas on Tuesday.

The Wildcats recovered well and didn't disappoint, defeating St. Olaf 1-0 to improve to 2-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC)  play and 6-2 on the season.

“All the things we worked on this past week came together today,” said Head Coach Chris Citowicki.

Today, things came together for the Wildcats just 20 minutes into the game when senior Christina Paik (Beaverton, Ore.) netted her fifth goal of the season off a pass from Leisl Wolf (Minnetonka, Minn.) to put the Wildcats up 1-0. After the score, the Wildcats took control and never gave up the lead on the way to victory.

From the beginning, the game was an evenly matched back-and-forth battle as the final shots were 12-11 in favor of the Oles. The Wildcats were forced to work on defense to maintain the lead.

“St. Olaf is a well coached team and we really had to battle for the game,” said Citowicki. “It was fun to watch and that's why the MIAC is such a great conference.”

First-year goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) had another great outing as she recorded nine saves on the day. She is now second in the conference in saves (51) and has a .823 save percentage.

Paik recorded two shots on goal in the game and made one of those count in a big way. She now moves into first on the team in points (10), while Wolf, who recorded her second assist on the season, moves into fourth (4 points).

First-years Grace Lowry (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Hannah Brown (Burnsville, Minn.) also contributed to the offensive effort for the Wildcats as Lowry's two shots on the day both made it to the net and Brown had three shots on the day to lead the team.

All around, Citowicki was happy with the day's result and how his team has continued to progress and work as a team to come up with positive results.

“The team always works hard and the more days that pass, the stronger we get,” said Citowicki. “We're playing well and starting to get some results.”

The Wildcats return to action at home on Wednesday at 4 p.m., taking on Bethel in another MIAC match up.
