After a strong start and finding itself in the regional rankings this week, the St. Catherine University soccer team had a lot to live up to as entering its second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest against St. Thomas Tuesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats came up just a little short against a very strong St. Thomas squad, falling 2-0 in the game and 1-1 in conference play.
“The credit goes to St. Thomas,” said Head Coach
Chris Citowicki. “They are one of the best teams in the MIAC this year. For us to come out and play the way we did was good.”
“The first twenty minutes we were nervous and that definitely led to them scoring the opening goal,” he said.
The Tommies came out strong as Taylor Sabrowski scored the game's first goal just seven minutes in off a rebound from Jenna Savino. From that point the Tommies never looked back, and Brittany Cochlin sealed the win with ten minutes left to play.
“The second half we came out much better, but we made a defensive mistake that led to the second goal,” said Citowicki.
In the second half the Wildcats recorded six of their eight total shots as they picked up some offensive momentum late in the game.
Morgan Worley (Woodbury, Minn.) had both of the Wildcat shots on goal.
Goalkeeper
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) kept the game close, stopping seven of the nine shots that came her way.
“Overall, I am pleased with how we played, but we can't wait to show up and play,” said Citowicki. “ We definitely cannot wait against St. Olaf.”
The Wildcats continue MIAC play against the Oles on Saturday, Sept. 22, at home as part of the St. Catherine Athletic Hall of Fame celebration.
