After suffering a tough loss to No. 7 UW-Superior Tuesday night, the St. Catherine University hockey team was looking to rebound with a win against a Finlandia University that was 0-8 heading into Friday's non-conference contest.
The Wildcats were able to do just that as they rolled to a 5-0 win over the Lions, thanks to goals from five different players, Friday night at Drake Arena.
The Wildcat first-years came to life as
Zoe Verkerke (Menominee, Mich.) scored her first collegiate goal to open up the scoring for the Wildcats at 10:50 in the first period with assists from
Michele McDonald (International Falls, Minn.) and
Annie Buttermore (Mahtomedi, Minn.), who both recorded three points to lead the Wildcats offensively.
After scoring just one goal in the first, the Wildcats took advantage of their scoring opportunities in the second adding three tallies to take a 4-0 lead into the third.
Hallie Paschke (New Prague, Minn.) kicked off the scoring surge at 8:08 in the second, netting her first goal of the season on a pass from
Becky Clifton (Imperial, Mo.) and
Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.), who both finished the night with two points.
Buttermore and McDonald would connect again to set up
Nicki Mosbeck (Emo, Ontario) for her third goal of the season and put the Wildcats up 3-0 with less than five to play in the period.
Despite strong play on the power-play all season, the Wildcats went 0-for-4 on their first opportunities of the game. That changed though at the 18:25 mark of the second as Buttermore would pick up a loose puck in front to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Just over a minute into the third period, Clifton scored on a huge blast from the top of the left circle to beat Finlandia goalie Breanna Hynes who stopped 56 of 61 Wildcat shots on goal.
Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.) earned her third win of the season in a seven-save shutout of the Lions.
Kasey Evans (Burnsville, Minn.) and
Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) also recorded assists in the game.
With the win, the Wildcats move to 6-3 on the season and will face the Lions again tomorrow for the second game of the non-conference doubleheader. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Drake Arena.
