After graduating a talented group of seniors from last season, the St. Catherine University hockey team looked to prove early on in the 2012-13 season that it would continue to be a dangerous threat in the always-tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the young squad couldn't find a way to get past Hamline University goaltender Sarah Schneekloth as the sophomore stopped all 47 Wildcat shots in a 2-0 decision in favor of the Pipers, Saturday afternoon in Vadnais Heights, Minn.

“We need to work on finishing our chances,” said Head Coach Brad Marshall whose team outshot Hamline 47-23 and went scoreless on six power play opportunities in the loss.

“When you outshoot the opponent 2-1 and go 0-for-6 on power play (opportunities) and score no goals, that's not good. We definitely need to fix it this week at practice.”

After a scoreless first period in which the Wildcats outshot the Pipers 15-9, it was Hamline that took advantage of a late opportunity in the second period to go up 1-0. Senior Ashley Maskel beat Wildcat goalie Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.) on a pass from Sam Berger to record her first goal of the season.

With just 1:02 remaining in the game, the Pipers put a comeback for the Wildcats out of reach as Kendra Krause netted her first goal of the season to seal the win for Hamline.

Geissler finished the game with 21 saves in net for the Wildcats, while junior Becky Clifton (Imperial, Mo.) led the Wildcat offensive attack with 10 shots on goal. Sophomore Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) also came up with five shots in the loss.

The Wildcats look to recover from their opening game loss next weekend as they face Augsburg for a two-game series to open up Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. The Wildcats travel to Minneapolis Friday, Nov. 10, for a 7 p.m., faceoff, before hosting the Auggies for their home opener at St. Paul Academy's Drake Arena, Saturday at 2 p.m.
