ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team fell 3-2 in the second game of the non-conference series with the visiting Johnson & Wales University Wildcats on Saturday evening at Drake Arena. The loss puts St. Kate's at 3-7-1 on the season as they have two upcoming non-conference games before returning to MIAC play.
Rookie
Ana Myers tallied her eleventh goal of the season 27 seconds into the opening period with help from
Raechel Painovich and
Ellie Skaja. JWU followed with two goals in the first period taking a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.
The visiting Wildcats scored their third and final goal of the game in the second period holding onto a two goal advantage until sophomore
Lilly Gillespie found the back of the net from
Halle Dunleavy and Painovich with 13 minutes to play in the contest. St. Kate's dominated in the third period out shooting JWU putting up 13 shots to their eight but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead they established in period two.
Lea Grassia appeared in net for St. Kate's making 18 saves and Myers led the shot count adding four while finishing plus one. Rookie
Paige Fasching had three shots on net finishing plus two along with Painovich.
St. Kate's travels to River Falls, Wisconsin on Thursday for a non-conference game against the defending Division III National Champions at 7 pm. The Wildcats will then host the first ever NCAA outdoor game played at Schells Rink hosted by the United Heros Leauge in Hastings, Minnesota on Saturday, January 11 with puck drop scheduled outdoors for 2 pm.
