EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The St. Catherine University volleyball team went 2-0 on the second day of the Sandy Schumacher Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Wildcats started the day with a 3-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls followed by a three set sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
In the first match, the Wildcats and Falcons battled in a close five set game. Both teams hit .108 in the match led by sophomore
Madison Fagan with 12 kills and six blocks. It was a team effort defensively with five players in the double-digits for digs led by senior
Claire Segner with 20.
In the opening set of match two, the Wildcats rallied back after being down five points to take set 1 25-20. UW-Superior pressured St. Kate's again in the middle of set two tying the score five times before the Wildcats took it 28-26. The third set was no different as St. Kate's was down 23-20 with first-year Ella Rustad leading the Wildcats to a 25-23 final.
Fagan closed out the day with 21 kills hitting 2.63 with eight blocks and two aces.
Tiffany Tellez recorded 16 kills between both matches with 27 digs and two blocks. Rustand led the team from the service line with eight including six from the UW-Superior match while tallying 21 digs and 41 assists.
St. Catherine opens conference play on Friday, September 22 travling to Hamline for a 7 pm match. The team makes their first apperance at home on Saturday hosting the College of Saint Benedict at 5 pm.
