ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Catherine volleyball split wins on Saturday falling to the Central College Dutch 3-2 before claiming a 3-0 win over Martin Luther College.
"It was great to play in Butler Gym in front of our home fans this weekend", said head coach
Todd Nelson. "Overall, I thought we did a good job of competing throughout the weekend. I'm pleased with where we are and where we can get to. There are some areas we need to tighten up in order to stay more in system and play steadier. We have an athletic team, but we need to execute at a more consistent level in order to use better utilize that athleticism."
MATCH ONE | Central 3, St. Kate's 2 (19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 13-15)
St. Kate's battled in their first match of the day dropping a five-set match to Central. The Dutch claimed set one by six points before the Wildcats dominated sets 2 and 3. The Dutch had the best of St. Kate's again in the fourth set to force the deciding fifth set.
First-year
Madison Fagan put on a show with 14 kills and four blocks hitting .481. She also had four digs and two aces to lead the Wildcats in multiple categories. Junior
Maggie Rosen was also in double digits with 12 kills and rookie
Tiff Tellez added ten for her third double-figure kills match in just seven this season.
Claire Segner recorded 20 digs with three assists and
Marissa Gilbertson added 34 assists and 3 kills.
MATCH TWO | St. Kate's 3, Martin Luther 0
St. Kate's cruised past the Knights in the first two sets of their second match on Saturday holding them to just 46 points in three sets. Martin Luther found momentum in the third set pressuring St. Kate's while tying the score eight times with six lead changes.
Tellez tallied eight kills in the match while Fagan and rookie
Emily Bredman each had three blocks.
St. Kate's will head to Eau Claire, Wisconsin next weekend for three matches before opening the conference season against Carleton in Northfield. The Wildcats return to
Butler Center on Friday, September 23 hosting Buena Vista at 7 pm.
